Why turbulence happens on this route
Three distinct atmospheric features shape this corridor. First, the North Atlantic segment brings you into contact with the polar jet stream, that fast winter river of air where sharp wind gradients can produce clear-air turbulence. Because JFK to FCO usually flies more or less along the jet's southern edge for a good speed boost, our crew picks an altitude that stays on the smoother side of it. Second, the descent phase across the Alps sometimes carries mountain wave turbulence in winter, when strong northerly winds crash over the mountain barrier and create standing waves downwind. Third, in summer, isolated thunderstorm activity is possible over the continent, but our onboard radar sees these cells clearly and we route around them. Most of the ocean crossing itself, once you are settled at cruise, is quiet.
Which seasons are bumpiest
December through February are the roughest months, driven by a strong polar jet over the Atlantic and Alpine mountain waves during the Rome descent. March can also be lively as winter storms continue crossing the Atlantic. Late summer and autumn, roughly late August through October, are typically the smoothest, with a weaker jet and settled weather over both the Atlantic and Europe. Even in winter, most flights are smooth for the majority of the eight hours, with rough patches concentrated in one or two zones that our forecasters can predict hours in advance.
How pilots handle it
