Route overview
The Los Angeles to Sydney run is flown daily by Qantas as QF11, along with United and Delta, on aircraft like the A380, 787-9, and 777-300ER. It covers about 12,000 kilometres and takes roughly 14 hours 30 minutes, crossing the equator over the open Pacific. Cruise altitudes typically start around FL320 and step up to FL380 or FL400 as fuel burns off. This is one of the more unusual long-haul routes because most of the flight is over open ocean with very little terrain influence.
Why turbulence happens on this route
The signature feature of LAX to SYD is the Intertropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, a band of low pressure near the equator where trade winds from both hemispheres meet. In this zone, warm humid air rises quickly and forms tall thunderstorm clusters that can reach the tropopause. Because the ITCZ is a permanent feature, every flight between North America and Australia crosses it somewhere. The good news is that these storms are convective, which means our onboard weather radar sees them clearly from a hundred nautical miles away and our crew can steer around individual cells. Outside the ITCZ, most of the Pacific portion of this flight is remarkably smooth. There is no polar jet, no major terrain, and the ocean below produces a stable, uniform air mass. Descent into Sydney sometimes brings light chop from onshore trade winds, but nothing unusual.
Which seasons are bumpiest
Unlike routes dominated by jet streams, LAX to SYD does not have a strong bumpy season. The ITCZ shifts north and south with the sun through the year, so its exact latitude changes, but its intensity does not vary as dramatically. Time of day matters more than time of year. Early departures from LAX often cross the equator at night or early morning when convective activity is weakest, giving a smoother ride. Late-afternoon crossings can encounter taller storm clusters after a day of tropical heating. Cyclone season in the South Pacific runs from November through April, but our routing keeps us well clear of any organised storms.
How pilots handle it
For a LAX to SYD flight our crew studies satellite images of the ITCZ during preflight and picks an initial track that avoids the most active clusters. During the ocean crossing we in the cockpit use long-range weather radar constantly, painting cells 150 nautical miles ahead and requesting lateral deviations of 10 to 40 nautical miles as needed. Air traffic control in the Oakland and Auckland oceanic sectors is used to these deviations and clears them quickly. Because the storms are visible on radar, our crew rarely gets surprised by convective turbulence, and passengers usually feel only a gentle bank as we steer around a cell.
What you can do as a passenger
Keep your seatbelt fastened whenever you are seated, especially during the ITCZ crossing, which usually happens in the middle third of the flight. Choose a seat over the wing if you are sensitive to motion. Drink water often and try to sleep during the crossing if possible, since sleep both passes the time and reduces sensitivity to small motion. If a bumpy patch begins, focus on slow, deliberate breathing and remind yourself that our crew saw it on radar long before you felt it. The rough parts pass quickly and the ride out of the ITCZ is usually completely smooth again.
