Route overview

London to Singapore is a thirteen-hour journey through almost every kind of weather the atmosphere produces. It begins in the mid-latitude westerlies and ends near the equator, where tropical convection is the main character. That range is why the ride can vary so much between flights.

Why turbulence happens on this route

The LHR-SIN track crosses several distinct weather regions in sequence. After departure the airplane climbs through European frontal systems and joins the mid-latitude jet stream over the Balkans or Turkey, depending on airspace routing. Clear-air turbulence, or CAT, is most likely here in winter, where sharp temperature gradients along the tropopause create wind shear. Passing over Central Asia or the Middle East the air is usually smoother because the atmosphere is drier and more stable. Things get more interesting once we descend toward the Indian subcontinent and the Bay of Bengal. During the summer monsoon this area is filled with tall cumulonimbus cells that can reach 50,000 feet, and we navigate around them using onboard radar. Closer to Singapore the airplane enters the Intertropical Convergence Zone, where warm humid air rises constantly and produces afternoon and evening thunderstorms. It looks dramatic from the flight deck, but with modern radar and long-range forecasting we route around the strongest cells. The bumps you feel are almost always the edges of these clouds, not their cores.

Which seasons are bumpiest

There are two peaks in the year. December to February brings the strongest jet streams over Europe and Asia, so clear-air turbulence at cruise is more common on the first half of the flight. June to September is the Indian and Bay of Bengal monsoon, so the second half sees more convective activity and more radar deviations near the destination. March to May and October to November are usually the calmest windows, with a weaker jet and less organized tropical activity. Time of day also matters near Singapore: late afternoon storms are common, while late night arrivals tend to feel smoother.

How pilots handle it

For a route this long we in the cockpit plan two flight profiles: one for the mid-latitude cruise and one for the tropical descent. We look at the jet-stream chart, the tropopause map, and satellite images of convection along the whole track. Alternate routings over the Middle East are prepared in case airspace or weather requires them. Once airborne we use weather radar continuously through the last three hours, request altitude changes to find smoother air, and coordinate with Mumbai, Kolkata, or Ho Chi Minh control for deviations. On a Singapore Airlines A380 or a British Airways 777, this planning happens quietly in the background of what you experience as a normal flight.

What you can do as a passenger

Try to sleep during the mid-flight cruise over Asia, which is often the smoothest part. Keep your seatbelt fastened whenever you are seated because tropical bumps can appear more suddenly than mid-latitude ones. If you know you are anxious, book a seat over the wing and near the front, which is less affected by pitch motion. Bring noise-cancelling headphones and a distraction you enjoy. And remember that the flight deck has been watching the weather for hours before any change you notice in the cabin.
