Chicago to London is a workhorse transatlantic route, around seven and a half hours from O'Hare to Heathrow. It follows the classic North Atlantic track system, but adds one small twist: Chicago departures often catch summer thermal activity over the Great Lakes before the ocean crossing even begins.

Why turbulence happens on this route

ORD to LHR uses the Organised Track System over the North Atlantic, choosing one of several parallel routes that shift daily to make best use of the polar jet stream. Riding the jet delivers strong tailwinds, but it also positions the aircraft near the tropopause, where wind shear can create clear air turbulence. The Chicago departure phase adds a small extra factor. In late spring and summer, thermal convection over the Great Lakes and the Midwest can produce afternoon thunderstorms and general bumpiness at lower altitudes for the first twenty or thirty minutes of the climb. Once above the weather, the crossing itself is typical North Atlantic cruise. On approach into Heathrow from the north or west, weather in the UK can occasionally add descent bumps, but the corridor is one of the most predictable long hauls in the world.

Winter is when the polar jet is at its most vigorous, so January and February bring the most clear air turbulence reports on the Atlantic segment. Summer swaps that story for departure convection. Chicago afternoons from June through August can produce thunderstorms that delay or route flights around cells during climb. Spring and autumn are typically the smoothest overall, with a manageable jet and less convective activity at either end. An evening departure, which most transatlantic flights are, is often past the peak heating hours, so summer thermal chop is usually limited to a short segment.

Before pushback we review the day's OTS options and choose the track with the best balance of tailwind and forecast smoothness. In summer we check the Chicago area convective forecast carefully and coordinate with air traffic control for any deviation needed after takeoff. Once oceanic, we in the cockpit listen for pilot reports from aircraft on the same or adjacent tracks and request altitude changes if a smoother layer is available. Step climbs during cruise let us follow the optimal altitude as fuel burns off. On descent into Heathrow, we brief early for holding, since the airport is often busy and stacking is common, and we time the seatbelt sign to expected bumps.
