Route overview
Roughly nine hours from London to Mumbai takes you across Europe, the Middle East, and finally the Arabian Sea. The ride depends heavily on the month you fly. In the cockpit, we plan this route very differently in July than we do in January.
Why turbulence happens on this route
The LHR to BOM corridor is a long trip through several distinct air masses. The European leg is usually calm cruise, occasionally influenced by the polar jet stream that meanders south in winter, giving pockets of clear air turbulence near the tropopause. Over Turkey and Iran, we sometimes see mountain wave activity when strong westerlies interact with the Zagros and Elburz ranges. From the Arabian Peninsula onward, the picture shifts. During the southwest monsoon, a deep low level jet forms over the Arabian Sea, feeding towering cumulonimbus clouds along the Indian west coast. These storm tops can reach 45,000 to 55,000 feet, higher than any airliner cruises, so we in the cockpit deviate around them using onboard weather radar and satellite data uplinked from dispatch. Outside the monsoon, the same airspace is remarkably smooth, with stable subtropical air giving glassy conditions on descent into Mumbai.
Which seasons are bumpiest
The bumpiest window is June through September, when the southwest monsoon is fully active. Convective cells build daily over the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, and arrivals into Mumbai often require radar vectoring around storms. October through May is generally the calm half of the year, though December and January can bring brief clear air turbulence over Europe from a strong polar jet. March through May tends to be the smoothest overall, with stable air and little convective activity along the whole track. Late September flights are typically improving as the monsoon retreats, but afternoon arrivals can still catch residual storm activity near the Indian coast.
How pilots handle it
Before every monsoon season departure we look at high resolution convective forecasts, satellite imagery, and pilot reports from the aircraft ahead of us on the same track. Fuel loads are increased so we have flexibility to divert laterally by 50 to 100 nautical miles around cells or hold if Mumbai approach is congested. The seatbelt sign goes on well before we enter suspected areas, and cabin crew are secured. Onboard, we tilt the weather radar carefully to see storm cores rather than just the tops, and we coordinate with air traffic control for step climbs as fuel burns off, which often lets us slip above lower layers of turbulence.
What you can do as a passenger
If you dislike turbulence, favour departures between November and April, when the corridor is at its calmest. Choose a seat over the wing, where motion is felt least. Keep your seatbelt fastened whenever you are seated, even with the sign off, since Arabian Sea convection can build quickly in summer. Hydrate well, avoid alcohol, and eat lightly on the descent into Mumbai during monsoon months. If you are especially anxious, a morning arrival tends to be smoother than an afternoon one, as thunderstorms grow with daytime heating.
